Obesity Surgery Mortality Risk Score

Obesity surgery is associated with complications and very rarely death. This scoring system helps understand the risks involved and may help in making a decision like whether to undergo surgery, the type of surgery, which hospital, which surgeon etc . The Obesity Surgery Mortality Risk Score (OS-MRS) was developed from a single institution and later validated in a multicentre trial (DeMaria et al in Annalsof surgery,2007). Male gender, advanced age and super obesity are all high risk categories for complications and mortality from obesity surgery.

This risk calculator is only a general guide. Every individual should be assessed by a doctor and risks and benefits should be analyzed. In some individuals risks may be high but obesity surgery may be potentially lifesaving and may be worth taking the risk. This decision should be jointly made by you and your doctor.
