Epworth Sleepiness Score

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) or sleep apnoea is a serious condition and is seen in people who are overweight and/or obese.

The Epworth score helps you to determine if you need any further test to diagnose and treat sleep apnoea.

Please find below 8 questions. Each of these questions have four options to choose from.

Some of you may not have experienced or been in these situations. Imagine yourself in these situations and choose the most appropriate answer.

CHANCE OF DOZING
0 = would never doze
1 = slight chance of dozing
2 = moderate chance of dozing
3 = high chance of dozing
SITUATION CHANCE OF DOZING
1. Sitting and reading
2. Watching TV
3. Sitting, inactive in a public place (e.g. a theater or a meeting)
4. As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break
5. Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit
6. Sitting and talking to someone
7. Sitting quietly after lunch without alcohol
8. In a car, while stopped for a few minutes in traffic

Score of 1-10 Normal

Your Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of 10 is within NORMAL limits.However if you have any symptoms suggestive of sleep apnoea it is advisable to see your doctor for further investigations. Some individuals may not score high on Epworths score but still may have apnoeic episodes.

Score of 11-14 Mild

Your Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of 12 indicates that you have MILD day time sleepiness. This should be further investigated especially if you have any symptoms of sleep apnoea. Please seek advice from your doctor.

Score of 15-18 Moderate

Your Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of 16 indicates that you have MODERATE day time sleepiness. This should be further investigated especially if you have any symptoms of sleep apnoea. Please seek advice from your doctor.

Score of 19-24 Severe

Your Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of 21 indicates that you have SEVERE day time sleepiness and should see your doctor for further investigation and treatment.
